50 Trendsetters To Watch #2: DapperPenniless, Harlem, NY

Currently residing in Harlem, I am an openly queer fashion blogger, photographer and full time administrator at NYU. In 2015, I started DapperPenniless as a way to showcase being “dapper” on my shoestring budget. I had very recently moved to NYC and saw a real lack of resources for women wanting to dress like I did without breaking the bank.  With that said, I decided to put my finds online and it caught on. Late 2016, I decided to start a Youtube channel just to give more depth to my platform and reach more people.

  • What are your long-range career goals?

Long term, I am planning to really build my brand into a home for content and resources that I’ve rarely been able to find. I want to be one of the go-to resources for dapper fashion and QPOC resources. I also plan to build on my photography business and really just mesh the two together. I’m talking empires!

  • What person do you look up to or has the most influence on you ?unnamed

I think I’m most influenced by the people around me. I love to see people thriving and just being happy, it makes me hopeful.

  • What are your hobbies, What do you for fun?

I really enjoy spending time with my partner of 2 years and my friends! I mean we do everything from weekend houses upstate to game nights! It’s good to catch up with people I care about and I try and always have my camera to capture the moments.

  • What advice would you give to a high school or college age student who is just discovering that he or she is attracted to the same sex?

I would definitely tell them to take their time. Don’t be pressured into figuring it out, finding yourself takes time. It was extremely hard for me to come out as I grew up in a Haitian and very religious household. Coming out meant challenging the environments I was used to. It meant going against the grain and possibly losing a lot of the relationships I had been accustomed to. At the end of the day I decided to take a chance on myself and do what felt right for me. It was hard every step of the way but I have found freedom in my truth, in my relationships, and my life as a whole!

  • How can we follow you on Social Media?

You can follow me on Instagram/Twitter @dapperpenniless, Youtube – www.youtube.com/dapperpenniless and my website www.dapperpenniless.com
